THE BRIEF

Warm, not showy. Refined, not staged.

The client came to Studio Kestrel with a clear vision: a warm, serene sanctuary in the Hamptons — a retreat from New York City where she and her family could slow down, play, and reconnect with nature. The home needed to feel refined yet joyful, stylish yet deeply livable, expressive without becoming overwhelming.

The starting point made the brief harder to deliver. The house had just been purchased as a builder spec — beautifully constructed but generic, cold, and devoid of identity. The work was less about renovating the structure than about building a family home where one had never existed.

THE APPROACH

Color in. Architecture softened. Family at the center.

Nature-inspired hues led the design. Layered wallpapers, painted accents, upholstery, and textiles brought warmth and personality into rooms that had been built generic. Organic materials and warm wood furnishings softened the home's architecture, and curated plantings extended the natural language from the surrounding forest into the interior.

Spaces were planned around how the family actually lives together — a game room with a poker table, foosball, and arcade games for the evenings; a media room anchored by a large curved sectional for shared movie nights; a living room with conversational and fireside seating zones for the in-between hours; an expansive dining table built to host extended family and guests. Outdoor spaces were treated as natural extensions of the interior, with thoughtful seating and poolside areas designed around the indoor-outdoor rhythm that defines a Hamptons summer.

Rich with color, texture and soul, it reimagines the Hamptons not as a showcase but as a sanctuary — a place where nature, family and design exist in perfect balance.

THE RESULT

From spec house to sanctuary.

The completed home balances refined design with playfulness — spaces that hold a slow morning just as well as a weekend full of family and guests. Most meaningfully, the home became a place where the family's daughters could move freely between indoors and nature, building memories during their most formative years. A house has become a home built around belonging — to the place, and to each other.
